| By: Julie Eibensteiner PT, DPT, CSCS A high school hockey player at a powerhouse program came to us with a history of back pain and a new diagnosis: stress fractures on both sides of his lower back from ramping up summer training too quickly. The recommendation elsewhere? Shut it down completely for months. This was in July. But with varsity tryouts in November and dreams of earning a coveted roster spot and eventually playing beyond high school – simply waiting wasn’t an option. He and his parents came to Laurus looking for answers. One of the biggest mistakes athletes make in this situation is digging out of two holes instead of one: 1. The actual injury. 2. The deconditioning that happens when you shut everything down entirely This is where working with a physical therapist experienced in reload planning for athletes is critical. And having the patience to trust the plan becomes a superpower.Because we had the time to listen, evaluate, and understand his goals, we built a five-phase plan that progressed him from complete rest back to full hockey activities. We coordinated closely with our performance coaches and his support team to ensure he: Healed safely Stayed strong Was confident upon return The result: He not only secured his varsity spot, but has since graduated and is now playing Tier 1 junior hockey – without setbacks. Bottom Line: Respecting the healing process is critical with injuries like these. 🚨 Push too soon, or ramp up too quickly after rest, and reinjury can wipe out another season. With a stepwise plan and the patience to follow it, you protect both your season and your long-term health. 👉 Want a clear plan and the confidence to return fully from a tricky injury? We can help. ![]() |
