Why you should take the time to sit in your victory – at least for a little while.

If you are keeping score, make sure you keeping track of both sides & be careful about moving the goalposts too soon.

——————————-
A mentor of mine, Chris, shared this with me this morning. It was a gift in mentality.Something are just better to hear from someone else – so I am passing the gift on to you.

I hope it resonates with the mountains you are climbing or dragons you’ve slayed whether it’s injuries or just life. Here’s what he had to say…

—–start of quote——

Too often, when we reach our goal, we immediately move the goalposts. We don’t take any time to sit in our win.

On to the next!On the other hand, when we have a bad month, we sit in it like a pig in slop.

We ruminate, we dwell, we think about failure all the time. When we get a little win, it bounces off us.

When we get a little loss, we sit in Shictory.
And sit there.
And sit there.

Here’s my challenge to you:
When you hit a goal or milestone, share it with everyone. You need to share it to make it stick.

Reward yourself. Give yourself something that will remind you of your victory long-term.

When the victory comes from someone else (a thank you or a compliment), print it out and stick it on your wall. You need a Hall of Fame to keep you out of the Hall of Shame.

When you hit a goal, focus on hitting it again – don’t kick the goalpost down. That creates a “gap” effect that means you’ll never be happy because you’re always chasing “more”.

—–end of quote——

We often tell our ACL rehabbers that they need to celebrate their wins if they are going to get upset with losses or frustrations.

“You don’t just keep score when the other team scores. Keep track of your points too!”

I like the idea of “sitting in victory.”

It’s a level beyond just acknowledging it.
Yes, keep setting goals and stretching yourself, BUT….be careful about cheating yourself out of a sense of accomplishment by being too quick to move on to the next as you will never truly be where you are.

Quick Recap
1. Life is hard.
2. Humans are wired to find the bad or not-good-enoughs.
3. It’s a trap. How to stay out of it? Take some time to sit in your victories.
